ABOUT OUR CLASSES
1)
THE SITCOM WORKSHOP
Pitching
You may enter on your first week with pitches for whichever show you
have chosen as your Spec. You will pitch to the table of writers and
receive valuable feedback on fleshing out your STORY. You will be guided
through the process and advised on how to choose your story.
Breaking The Story
Every show incorporates this process into the weekly schedule. THE SITCOM
WORKSHOP allows you to participate in this process and
utilize it for the breaking of your own story for your own Spec.
Beat Sheets
You will be asked to further flesh out the story on your own and create
the industry-standard beat sheet (a mini-outline). You will present
your well-executed and thought-out story in this form at your next class
and receive feedback on your STORY EXECUTION. At the end of class you
will be asked to write another beat sheet based on notes given or you
will go to draft.
Weekly Table Reads
A great tool to help determine if a joke is working or failing flat.
This process is utilized on every show in production from Will &
Grace to Sex and the City. When your script is read by professional
actors, you will be able to hear where it's working and where it's not.
All writers on our "staff' attend the reading of YOUR script and
are prepared to comment on it after the reading.
Discussion of Story
Our process is exactly like the process on staff - pitching a story,
breaking a story, writing several drafts of an outline or beat sheet
of that story and then going to draft. The draft is then tested with
a table read. In a table environment, Sheree will lead a discussion
about your 1st draft which is results-oriented. We look for SOLUTIONS,
not just a critique.
Punching and Polishing
Once the story on your spec is working, you will have a table of writers
to HELP YOU punch your spec. This network-used group experience GUARANTEES
you will emerge from The Sitcom Workshopat a professional
level with a competitive spec for the marketplace.
2)
THE SCREENWRITER'S WORKSHOP/ONE HOUR TELEVISION WORKSHOP
We specialize
in helping the writer write a professionally executed screenplay or
one hour spec. Your 1st draft is read by professional actors who help
bring it to life. Afterward we discuss your script in terms of story
execution. We take a close look at your inciting incident, turning points,
midpoints and act breaks (for one hours). We evaluate the effectiveness
of your crisis, climax and resolution. Are your characters clearly developed?
We brainstorm for ideas to improve your script in the rewrite process
and then you bring it back for another read and more polishing. This
is a proven effective method in which to develop your screenplay or
one hour spec.
In last year's class
we had one writer hired onto WEST WING and another chosen for
the WARNER BROTHERS ONE HOUR WORKSHOP! In the feature arena,
we had SEVERAL features optioned.
